AI-Powered Building Management: Startups Enhancing Smart Buildings

By Mwikisa Kanguya

Building management is one of the many industries that artificial intelligence (AI) is changing. At the vanguard of this shift are startups that are using AI to design more intelligent, effective, and sustainable buildings. These forward-thinking businesses are creating state-of-the-art solutions that maximise energy efficiency, boost security, increase tenant comfort, and simplify maintenance procedures. These firms’ integration of AI technologies lowers building owners’ and managers’ operating expenses while also advancing more general environmental sustainability objectives.

The size of the worldwide smart building market was estimated at USD 96.96 billion in 2023, and it is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.8% from USD 117.42 billion in 2024 to USD 568.02 billion by 2032.

This week, we spotlight three companies that are driving innovation in the sector:

Next Sense:
Next Sense is a Dutch company founded by Ferdinand Grapperhaus that is dedicated to decarbonising real estate through the use of data, care, and purpose. Their smart building platform provides valuable insights, detailed performance reports, and AI control to help buildings achieve their Paris-proof goals and align with ESG standards. Next Sense aims to accelerate the net zero transformation of real estate by making every building compliant with carbon footprint data requirements, using simulations and AI to meet legislative demands.

Ventive Limited:
Ventive is a Uk based company founded by Tom Lipinski that specialises in designing and manufacturing innovative passive ventilation systems in the UK. Their PVHR systems provide fresh air to buildings through natural methods like wind speed and air buoyancy, offering advantages such as lower carbon emissions, reduced operating costs, and easy installation. Ventive’s solutions aim to provide intelligent building service systems that prioritise energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, catering to the needs of architects, consultants, and building owners looking to enhance indoor air quality and comfort while minimising their carbon footprint.

Cityzenith:
Cityzenith is a US-based company founded by Michael Jansen. Their Urban Digital Twin platform is designed to enhance the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of cities, buildings, and infrastructure. Developed by the original software architects behind Google Earth, Cityzenith collaborates with global institutions dedicated to sustainable building practices. Their SmartWorldOS⢠platform aims to revolutionise the built environment by reducing carbon emissions, improving operational costs, and promoting sustainable construction practices. Through initiatives like the ‘Clean Cities – Clean Future’ project, Cityzenith is at the forefront of transforming urban landscapes towards a more sustainable future.

AI integration in building management is becoming a reality, thanks to creative entrepreneurs that are changing the smart building scene. It is no longer a futuristic idea. These businesses are developing cutting-edge technologies that support global sustainability goals while simultaneously improving operational effectiveness and occupant experience. AI’s uses in building management will probably grow as it develops further, providing advanced solutions to address the problems associated with contemporary infrastructure. Buildings may now be more intelligent, sensitive, and sustainable than ever thanks to the innovations driving this movement, which is setting new benchmarks in the building industry.
