How Global Technology Giants Are Expanding AI’s Role in Healthcare

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping healthcare, and some of the world’s largest technology companies are positioning themselves at the forefront of this transformation. Firms once known primarily for cloud computing, search engines, and e-commerce are now building tools that support clinical decision-making, enhance patient engagement, and expand access to care.
From AI-powered virtual health assistants to large-scale public health initiatives, companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and CVS Health are exploring how advanced technologies can address some of healthcare’s most persistent challenges.
This shift reflects a deeper reality: healthcare systems globally are under increasing pressure. Aging populations, workforce shortages, and rising demand for services are forcing providers to rethink how care is delivered. In this context, artificial intelligence is emerging as a critical enabler of more efficient and accessible care, capable of analyzing vast amounts of data and automating routine processes.
Amazon, for instance, recently introduced a Health AI agent designed to help patients navigate their care through conversational interactions. Integrated into Amazon’s website and mobile app, the tool enables users to view their health records, manage prescription renewals, and book appointments with One Medical providers. By offering continuous, on-demand support, Amazon is positioning AI as a first point of contact in the patient journey.
Microsoft is taking a complementary approach by focusing on clinicians. Its newly introduced Copilot Health is designed to support healthcare professionals by summarising medical information, assisting with documentation, and streamlining administrative workflows. In a sector where clinicians often spend significant time on paperwork, such tools aim to reduce cognitive and operational burdens, allowing more time for direct patient care.
Beyond individual tools, some companies are building broader platforms to reshape how patients engage with healthcare systems. CVS Health, in partnership with Google Cloud, has launched Health100, a new technology services subsidiary focused on delivering an integrated digital health engagement platform. By combining CVS Health’s clinical and pharmacy ecosystem with Google Cloud’s data and AI capabilities, the initiative aims to create a more connected and personalized healthcare experience for consumers.
At the same time, big tech is also applying AI to targeted public health challenges. Google’s recent heart health initiative in rural Australia highlights this approach. Designed to address gaps in access to cardiac care, the program uses AI to support earlier detection of cardiovascular risk in communities where specialist services are limited and wait times are significantly longer. In regions where cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death, such interventions could play a critical role in improving early diagnosis and timely referrals.
Taken together, these efforts signal a growing and more deliberate role for technology companies in healthcare. Unlike traditional healthcare innovators, such as pharmaceutical firms or medical device manufacturers, big tech brings strengths in data infrastructure, scalable platforms, and advanced AI capabilities. These competencies are enabling new models of care that are more digital, proactive, and patient-centered.
However, this growing influence also raises important questions. As AI becomes more embedded in clinical workflows and patient-facing platforms, issues around data privacy, clinical validation, and equitable access become increasingly critical. Ensuring these technologies are deployed responsibly and genuinely improve outcomes without widening existing gaps will be essential.
