Ecosystem Development at The FutureList
By Monica Pun
One of the things that excited me most about joining The FutureList was the opportunity to visit and map tech ecosystems—both local and global—and help nurture their growth. The ripple effect this can have on economic prosperity is profound. Over the last few months, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn and nurture ecosystems across Canada, Rwanda, South Africa, London and Kenya.
At The FutureList, ecosystem development is at the heart of what we do. We aim to foster and grow entrepreneurial ecosystems worldwide by understanding their unique stages and challenges. We then focus on spotlighting innovators and providing tailored support to the key players in these ecosystems—founders, investors, accelerators, hubs, and partners. We believe in nurturing ecosystems at every stage, giving entrepreneurs the tools, connections, and support they need to grow and scale—especially those emerging from Africa’s vibrant innovation hubs.
During our recent virtual entrepreneurship retreat, we hosted a powerful Fireside Chat with Fred Swaniker, CEO of Sand Technologies who shared his insights on “what it means to be an entrepreneur” and the importance of understanding different ecosystems and markets for global scalability. This discussion sparked the critical question: “Can a payment solution in Kenya also work in London? Or could an EdTech solution from the U.S. succeed in Estonia?”
As we continue working with entrepreneurs worldwide, we’re always excited about those thinking and planning for global scalability. Our goal is to connect the dots across various ecosystems so they can collaborate and thrive together.
Following the retreat, our team took a deep dive into how ecosystems evolve, using insights from Startup Genome’s Ecosystem Lifecycle Analysis. We explored the four key stages of ecosystem development and how The FutureList can play a role in each:
- Activation: This stage is about building the foundational elements—entrepreneurs, talent, and community. We focus on fostering local collaboration and creating the right support structures for new ventures to thrive.
- Globalisation: Once ecosystems are established, the goal is to connect them to global markets. We use our international network to help startups access customers, capital, and partners outside their local environments.
- Expansion: As the ecosystem matures, it’s about scaling startups and attracting more investment. We work with key stakeholders to ensure scaling companies have access to resources and funding for rapid growth.
- Integration: In this final stage, ecosystems become fully interconnected with local and global markets, creating a self-sustaining loop of innovation. Our efforts then shift to ensuring these ecosystems remain competitive and sustainable.
At The FutureList, our ecosystem, research and entrepreneurship teams understand the importance of identifying where an ecosystem stands in this lifecycle and adapting strategies accordingly. This enables us to provide more targeted and impactful support, helping entrepreneurs tackle the challenges they face at each stage.
By leveraging these learnings, we’re excited to continue playing a vital role in nurturing ecosystems worldwide. Our commitment to ecosystem development drives lasting change in entrepreneurship, helping businesses not only survive but thrive on a global scale.
