Smart Metering and Billing Solutions in Water Utilities

By David Armaah

Smart metering and billing solutions transform water utilities by making water usage tracking more accurate and efficient. Traditional water meters often require manual readings, leading to errors and delays. In contrast, smart meters provide real-time data, helping utilities and consumers better manage water use.

The global smart water metering market is growing rapidly. In 2024, it’s valued at about $4.67 billion and is expected to reach around $14.06 billion by 2034, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.64% during this period.

Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) systems collect detailed water usage data and use AI to analyze it. This analysis helps detect leaks, forecast demand, and automate billing, leading to more accurate charges and better resource management.

Another advantage of smart metering is that it empowers consumers to manage their water usage more effectively. Many smart meter systems come with mobile apps or online dashboards that allow households and businesses to track their water consumption in real time. This transparency encourages better conservation habits, helping to lower water bills while promoting sustainability. Some cities have even introduced personalized water-saving recommendations based on smart meter data, further driving efficient water use.

Several startups are leading innovations in this field:

WINT Water Intelligence: WINT uses AI and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to detect leaks and manage water use in buildings. Led by CEO, Alon Geva, their system can automatically shut off water in case of leaks, preventing damage and conserving water.

Namara: Namara offers an AI-powered smart water control system that allows homeowners to customize water flow on demand. Founded by T.J. Cooley, Namara’s technology enables real-time monitoring and reduction of water consumption, promoting conservation and smarter water management.

Olea Edge Analytics: Based in Austin, Olea Edge Analytics has developed a platform that optimizes water delivery, billing, and conservation for municipal water utilities. Their AI-driven solutions enhance the accuracy of water metering and billing processes. The company is led by Dave Mackie.

These technologies are reshaping the water utility industry by improving efficiency, reducing waste, and ensuring fair billing. As smart metering becomes more widespread, both utilities and consumers stand to benefit from a more sustainable and transparent approach to water management.
